Grownups Grow Down

School is out!  Summer is here!  The roads are less busy, the pace in the office has slowed slightly, and we eagerly await our turn for a week or few of vacation.   Mine has arrived.  Phew.

Whether it is to go nowhere and do stuff - or to go away and do nothing – summer vacation is the only time that grownups get to be kids again.

We go outside…. into the heat, the warm rain, or under a blanket of stars.  We find ourselves among daisies, on a shore, or in a boat with white fluffy clouds above.  We feel strong wind and hear it through the trees.  We play.  We putter.  We gather, or we retreat.  We dine outside, linger later into the evening and savour the long, slow sunset.  We kick up our feet and nap.  Hammocks swing.  Paddles dip.  Open fires crackle.  Cool glasses clink.  We find friends and we enjoy families.  We drive with the windows down and the music up loud.  We go to the movies just before dark.  We wear silly hats, skinny dip and play cards.  We stay in tents, use flashlights and watch fireflies.  We twirl, we splash and we laugh.

“Growing down is the term we use to symbolize the movement back to a feelings enriched life…we experience the joy of being alive, living one day at a time with no fear or dread of the future…we awaken our creative spirit so that we can again enjoy playing, having fun, and relaxing.”   – from coping.org
