Being Real

I’m back now from a week away at the lake.  The “cottage” has been in my family for over a century, and I migrate there almost by instinct in the summer.  It is a beautiful and complex place, layered with history and tradition.

More influential than any single person or event, this place and its tribal echo have shaped my identity and informed many of my most significant choices.  Looking back, it has been hard to find my wings and to fly away from such firmly planted roots.

I feel lucky to have finally found the sky beyond the lake.  Now, when circling back, I really enjoy the ride.

There are two lasting bequests we can give our children: One is roots, the other is wings.
