Each Thanksgiving, I escape to cottage country to enjoy friends, family and the fall foliage. Often, I make time to take in some of the Haliburton County Studio Tour, which has been growing more and more popular every year. In its 21st season, this annual event features 26 artisans, and offers an opportunity for visitors to see them at work in their studios.

So this weekend, I stopped in to check out the work of Wayne and Sylvia Rose of Studio Rose. Wayne and Sylvia do beautiful stoneware and raku pottery & sculpture that incorporate rich colours, textures and experimental glazes. Holed up in the woods just outside of Minden, and surrounded by the trails they maintain, Wayne and Sylvia’s studio includes an outdoor kiln and an open pit for cooling pieces after they’re fired. Former educators, they remain dedicated to sharing their love for and knowledge of art with young people.
Highly recommended by a very cool “girl about Haliburton“ I know who also happens to be their apprentice, I was treated to the insider’s tour. Here are a few of the lovely pieces I was fortunate to find…can you spot the work of the beginner?

1. outside studio, 2. chicken wire, 3. raku bud vase, 4. stoneware & raku dishes, 5. outdoor display, 6. bear pottery, 7. walk in the woods, 8. apprentice, 9. walk in the woods vase

Thank you for the posting about our studio. We loved the comments and the pictures you took – very creative.
